Constance "Connie" Wheeler

Constance “Connie” M. Wheeler, 73, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at her home on Thursday evening, March 25, 2021.  She was born on April 5, 1947 in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Wilfred and Evelyn (Floyd) Gross.

Connie loved  being a Boilermaker and was a member of Local 374. She belonged to the New Harmony American Legion Auxiliary Post 370, Mt. Vernon Eagles, and  was a very active member of the New Harmony Christian Church, where she served as the pianist and choir director for many years.  Having been a member of Wolfgang Orchestra and Chorus for many years, Connie was serving as president of the board for 2021.  She shared her God given gift of voice by participation in the Chorus and shared her talents as a soloist for the Chorus and Jazz Band.  She had a keen interest in Posey County and quite often attended Commissioners Meetings.  She was  very caring and always thinking of others by baking treats of all kinds and soups for those that needed uplifting.  A fantastic seamstress, she made everything from formal gowns and matching handbags to doing alterations for many. Her dog Precious and cat Pepper were special to her. Connie's greatest love was her grandchildren, they were the light of her life. She enjoyed being with them, teaching them to cook and many other life skills.

She is survived by her children, Melissa (Greg) Knight of Carmi, John W. (Devvy) Mathews II of Mt. Vernon, and David Allen (Chabli) Mathews of New Harmony; 8 grandchildren, Ashleigh (Matt) Turner, Andrew, Jordan & Kassidy Knight, John Mathews III, Addison & Savannah Mathews, and Trevor Loehr;  great-grandchild, Mason Ezra Turner; and her companion of 13 years, Ermil Robinson.  She was preceded in death by Fred Wheeler and niece, Robin Dawn Gross.

A  Private Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday April 17, 2021 at the New Harmony Christian Church. A  Public Celebration of Life will be held from 2-4 p.m. also at the New Harmony Christian Church on that same afternoon.  Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon is in charge of arrangements.  Memorials may be made to Wolfgang Orchestra and Chorus, New Harmony Christian Church and New Harmony American Legion Post 370 Women's Auxiliary.  Online condolences may be left at www.stendebackfamilyfuneralhome.com
