Stephen "Steve" Mitchell

Stephen Eugene Mitchell, 67, of Enfield passed away Monday afternoon, March 1, 2021 at  Deaconess Gateway Hospital, surrounded by family. He was born on November 2,1953, the first son of Gene and Virginia (Petry) Mitchell.  Steve attended Booth School in Enfield and then graduated from Enfield High School in 1971 as Valedictorian of his class.  Following high school, Steve attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Industries in 1975.

He began his career with Wabash Valley Service Company the same year and retired September 1, 2020 with 46 years of dedicated service to the Farmers of White County.

Over the years Steve was known as the "Grain Bin" guy for his extensive knowledge in repairing and constructing grain handling facilities.  He worked countless hours after dark, and weekends to keep the farmer's harvest running smoothly.  Steve was a member of the St. Patrick's Church in Enfield where he was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.  He also was a trustee for 35 years for the Enfield Fire Department.

Steve is survived by seven siblings, Jane Steed of Mt. Vernon, IL., Dan and wife Julie of Wadesville, IN., Tony and wife Teresa of McLeansboro, IL., Nancy Thomas and husband Steve of Springerton, IL. Clara Vaughn and husband Dean of Enfield, IL., Chris and Cathy of Enfield, IL. and Greg of Noblesville, IN.; numerous nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Virginia; infant sister, Yvonne Kathleen in 1952; and his brother-in-law, Mike Steed.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Enfield. A Knights of Columbus Chalice service will begin at 9:45 a.m. Burial at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery. Friends and family may visit from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday March 4, 2021 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with a Rosary Service beginning at 4:30 p.m.  Memorial contributions can be made in Steve's memory to the Knights of Columbus and will be accepted  by Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield who is in charge of the arrangements. In accordance with CDC and IDPH recommendations, social distancing will be observed and wearing masks will be required.
